Islanders have been encouraged to participate in a charity sleep-out in Guernsey at the end of the month.

More than 130 people have signed up to The Big Skipton Sleep Out, which aims to raise awareness and funds for homeless people in the island.

Participants will camp out in sleeping bags at the King George V (KGV) from 19:00 GMT on 24 January until 06:30 the following day.

Event organisers Skipton International and Caritas said they hoped funds raised would contribute to the charity's modular housing project.

'Valuable contribution'

Caritas, a homelessness charity, recently announced it was aiming to raise £1m and secure land to build temporary accommodation for up to two years.

More than 200 children will also take part in their own sleep-out at Les Maingy, the charity said.

Jane King, from Guernsey Scouts, said it was going to be a "huge challenge, especially at this time of year".

"We are hoping that our young people will be prepared for whatever weather is thrown at us and will be able to make a valuable contribution to Caritas' modular housing project," she said.
