An application for solar panels to slash energy bills is the latest step in the development of a newly established country park.

Sunderland City Council will consider a request to install roof-mounted solar panels at a garden centre and cafe in Elemore Country Park, Hetton.

In recent years, the 61-acre former golf club has been transformed under council plans to turn it into a community hub.

A report seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service says solar panels at the community-run facilities could shave thousands of pounds from energy bills.

The application forms part of the council's ongoing plans to develop the park and create a more engaging public space for the community.

Changes so far have seen a play park installed, family-friendly festivals hosted and grant funding awarded to support community initiatives.

Work is also under way to create a circular fitness trail using the existing footpath network and new paths to accommodate exercise equipment.

The council's planning committee is also set to consider an application for bike storage facilities as part of proposals to open a volunteer-run cycle hub.

A decision on the solar panels is expected before the end of February.
