People told to leave their home in Jersey because of a suspected gas leak in St Helier have been allowed to return.

Island Energy asked for the evacuation of one household around Maison St Louis on Christmas Eve after reports of the leak.

Engineers checked the area and completed final checks on Monday to confirm there was no trace of gas at the site.

The energy company said "a small number of people were evacuated" before it "arranged temporary accommodation for them" and confirmed they could return when they are ready.

'Strict policy'

A spokesperson from Island Energy said the organisation has "a very strict policy and procedure in the event of a report of a gas escape".

"We use highly sensitive gas detection equipment and follow an industry standard process on all call-outs," they added.

People have been advised to call 01534 755555 to report any suspected smell of gas.
