A man has appeared in court charged in connection with street disorder in Leeds last summer.

Catalin Tiuga, 41, of Bayswater Crescent, appeared before the city's magistrates' court on Wednesday charged with arson and violent disorder in Harehills on the evening of 18 July.

He was granted unconditional bail to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 13 February.

The disorder was sparked after four children were removed from their family and taken into emergency care over concerns they would be taken out of the UK. The children were later returned to extended family members.

On the same night a police car was tipped over by a crowd and a double-decker bus was torched.

On Wednesday West Yorkshire Police confirmed they had made more than 40 arrests in connection with the events, with 15 people charged and five sentenced.

The force said it continued to "conduct a wide-ranging investigation" into the disorder, with officers making "substantial use of all technological tools available" to identify suspects.
