Totnes Castle could close during the winter
Totnes Castle in Devon is one of 21 English Heritage Sites which could be closed n the winter season as part of a review.
The charity looks after more than 400 historic sites across England, including Stonehenge, Hadrian's Wall and Carlisle Castle.
The review of the organisation's structure was launched to develop proposals to allow the charity "to meet the opportunities and challenges of the next few years from a position of strength".
They said Totnes Castle, in Devon, was one of the 21 sites being reviewed having welcomed only 11 visitors last November.
A spokesperson said: "The reality is that we welcome a tiny number of visitors to these particular sites when they are open at weekends during the winter months.
"Over one weekend in November, Totnes Castle only welcomed 11 visitors – English Heritage is a charity and the cost of opening a site over the winter months is simply not offset by those small number of visitors," said the spokesperson.
They said a number of its other sites already closed for the winter.
The spokesperson said: "High inflation has increased the cost of conservation work at our sites but significant and ongoing expenditure is still required if the condition of the sites in our care is not to deteriorate."
Staff and unions are being consulted on the proposals.
