Bin collections to be halved despite opposition
BBCA council has announced plans to halve the frequency of general waste collections, despite residents' opposition to the move.
Cumberland Council said black bins will be collected every fortnight instead of once a week in the former Allerdale area from May.
The authority previously launched a consultation on the plans, with 41% of those responding stating they were against the proposals, 31% finding the change acceptable, and the remainder not giving a view.
Councillor Denise Rollo maintained the changes, together with other initiatives implemented to harmonise how waste is collected across the area, would provide a "reliable and efficient" service.
Cumberland Council was created in 2023, following the merger of Allerdale, Copeland and Carlisle councils, each of whom operated separate waste collections.
The authority said the new plans were intended to make collections "fairer" and more efficient.
Garden waste
Carlisle and Copeland residents already have their black bins collected on a fortnightly basis, with Allerdale brought in line with the rest of the authority's jurisdiction from May.
Garden waste collections will also be subject to changes, with one garden bin per household collected for free, and the introduction of £40 annual charge for additional bins from 31 March - in line with current charges in Copeland.
In addition, garden waste collections will operate on fortnightly basis across the summer, between March and November.
Residents in Carlisle currently collect recycling in dedicated boxes and bags, but from May, the council will provide two designated wheelie bins instead.
Rollo, whose role at the council includes Waste and Street Scene and Environmental Improvements, said: "The changes to our service will provide a reliable and efficient waste collection service, while ensuring fair and consistent access for all households."
