A burst water main has flooded a busy roundabout forcing a road to be closed.

The A189 in North Tyneside has been shut in all directions after the pipe on Sandy Lane, north Gosforth, Newcastle, burst in the early hours.

CCTV footage shows Sandy Lane roundabout's multiple lanes completely covered in water and a number of cars submerged.

Northumbrian Water said it was working to fix the pipe and hoped the road would be reopened in the next 24 hours.

"The burst was reported in the early hours and crews have worked through the night to isolate and begin the repair, which includes rezoning the water network so there is minimal impact to our customers' supply," a company spokesperson said.

The road has been closed at the junction of Killingworth Way and Sandy Lane roundabout.

Police are asking motorists to use alternative routes.

North Tyneside Council said it was made aware of the leak and highway engineers had been sent to the site.

"We are assisting with road closure signing and have advanced warning notices on our variable message signs at Moor Farm and Killingworth Way advising motorists of the closure," a council spokesperson said.

"Diversion routes will be signed accordingly if required following the repair and clean-up operation."
