The hospital said it was working to fix a technical fault with the lifts

A maternity unit has been closed to new admissions until further notice because the lifts have stopped working.

The George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton said it would divert patients to other providers until the "technical issue" could be resolved.

Antenatal appointments, including scans, were not affected, but it advised patients they would have to use the stairs and asked them to call to make other arrangements if that would cause problems.

The hospital apologised and said it would still be providing a regular triage service for women in need of support.

Patients not in need of urgent help were asked to wait to be contacted.
