Parcels to the UK will be an average of 18% cheaper while those to Jersey will drop 12%

The price of sending letters in Jersey will rise by a third later this month, but the price of parcels will go down, Jersey Post has said.

Standard letters of 100g sent to Jersey addresses will go up from 60p to 80p, while letters to the UK will go up from 98p to £1.35.

However, sending parcels will drop by an average of 12% for parcels sent on island and 18% to the UK.

Mark Siviter, Jersey Post's CEO, said the company had had to make some tough decisions: "[We] think it's right we pay our hard-working posties the living wage."

Mr Siviter said: "The way customers use our service is changing; in particular, people are sending fewer cards and letters."

The company had held prices for two years, he said, but fewer people sending letters and above-inflation price rises had forced the company's hand.

Jersey Post said it was making "a series of changes to help businesses", including phasing out green book postage accounts, making it easier for customers to declare their mail via an online portal, and volume discounts for letters.
