The Manchester Marathon saw about 36,000 runners take to the streets of the city

Thousands of runners have crossed the finish line for this year's Manchester Marathon.

About 36,000 people took part in the race, which began at 09:00 BST.

Runners set off at 10-minute intervals through to 11:30, starting by Old Trafford football stadium and finishing by Manchester University on Oxford Road.

Crowds of tens of thousands gathered to cheer on those tackling the 26.2-mile (42.1km) route for a variety of causes.

Among the runners taking part was Kelsey Sheridan, from Middleton, Rochdale.

The 28-year-old, who was unable to walk while struggling with chronic fatigue syndrome, said running the marathon was a "victory lap" to celebrate how far she has come.

Four presenters from BBC Radio Manchester also took part.

Michelle Dignan, Joe McGrath, Joel Mitchell and Gaz Drinkwater were aiming to complete the course as a four-in-four challenge, finishing the route together within just four hours.

Manchester Marathon announced the first finishers on Facebook. Josh Griffiths completed the marathon in 02:16:56 and Tessa McCormick finished it in 02:34:53.

More than 90,000 people across the country took on 26.2 miles in the largest day of marathon running ever to take place in the UK.

The London Marathon also began earlier, which saw 56,000 runners tackle the course in England's capital.
