Senior politicians in Jersey, led by the chief minister, are set to oversee gas safety in the island.

Deputy Lyndon Farnham set up the Gas Ministerial Group (GMG) to ensure "regular oversight" of any gas work so it could be aware of "any issues", the government said.

The number of possible gas leaks reported in Jersey rose sharply in the past two years to 63 in 2024, compared to a maximum of 14 each year between 2020 and 2022.

A gas leak forced the evacuation of 21 homes in the Le Geyt area in January and on Christmas Eve a household had to evacuate due to a suspected gas leak at a property in St Helier.

The GMG includes Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Farnham, the Minister for the Environment Deputy Steve Luce, Minister for Infrastructure Constable Andy Jehan and Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Deputy Mary Le Hegarat.

The group, which is expected to meet monthly, said memberships may be extended "to include wider political representation when deemed appropriate by the chair".
