Devon and Somerset Fire Service said crews were called to the westbound A30 near Whiddon Down at about 14:20 GMT on Monday to tackle a blaze which "completely destroyed" a vehicle.
National Highways said on X the road was closed between the junctions with the A377 near Exeter and A382 in Okehampton while the incident was dealt with.
The post added one lane reopened at 18:20, but delays of more than 90 minutes were being reported on the A30 before the road fully reopened at 19:45.
