One of the UK's biggest cheddar cheese suppliers has said dozens of jobs are at risk at a dairy plant in Cornwall.

Saputo Dairy UK, the firm that manufactures brands including Cathedral City, announced a proposal to slash 60 jobs at its Davidstow Creamery, near Camelford.

It said it was proposing stopping manufacturing ingredients for the baby formula market - a move which could also lead to 20 other job losses elsewhere in the company.

The firm said "market conditions" meant it needed to take "difficult but decisive action", but added cheese production would not be affected.

The cheesemaker has made ingredients for the infant formula market since 2013, but it has proposed returning to producing sweet whey powder.

It said it would enter into "a period of consultation with a group of employees regarding these proposed changes".

The company said the changes were expected to be completed by September.

A spokesperson said: "Market conditions are such that we are having to take difficult, but decisive, actions to simplify the business and introduce meaningful efficiencies to ensure we are best placed for the future.

"We will ensure that all employees who may be impacted by this proposal are well supported."
