Red Arrows confirm comeback after cancellation

The Red Arrows have confirmed they will appear at this weekend's national Armed Forces' Day celebrations, a week after pulling out of a display at the last minute.

The RAF aerobatics team was expected to close the Duxford Air Show near Cambridge on 22 June but cancelled due to an "unexpected, temporary closure" of the airfield at RAF Mildenhall, where the team was operating from.

The BBC has asked the US base for comment.

Officials have now confirmed the Red Arrows will appear at the Armed Forces' event in Cleethorpes and at the Shuttleworth Festival of Flight in Bedfordshire on Saturday.

In a post on social media, the Red Arrows, which are based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, gave more details about the circumstances surrounding cancellation of the Duxford display.

It read: "This was due to an unexpected, temporary closure of the airfield we were operating from very shortly before the planned display at Duxford.

"This coming weekend's schedule and shows are unaffected.

"Our operating airfields are carefully selected based on distance to the show site, runway length and emergency response cover.

"Not all military airfields are available for use at weekends."

The Cleethorpes Armed Forces' Day event is one of the largest in the UK and attracts thousands of people to the seaside resort.

In addition to the Red Arrows flypast, visitors will also see parades and displays of military vehicles.
