Wreckage of crash causing train chaos hauled away

The vehicle was removed from the tracks on Friday afternoon

The wreckage of a car which damaged railway lines after plummeting off a roundabout onto the tracks in the early hours of Friday morning, has been removed.

Network Rail used a road-railer to remove the BMW, which crashed off the M602 motorway at 02:00 GMT and onto the Chat Moss Line near Salford, causing travel chaos in the north-west of England.

The resulting damage has led to significant disruption of train services between Manchester and Liverpool, and more widely across northern England and north Wales. Engineers hope to have the line repaired by 22:00 GMT.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
