Plans for new museum and art gallery approved
A proposal to turn Huddersfield's former library into a new museum and art gallery has been approved by the council.
The plans mark the second phase of Kirklees Council's "Our Cultural Heart" development, which began with the former Queensgate Market building being transformed into a food hall and new library.
The council said the museum, situated in the four-storey Grade II-listed building on Princess Alexandra Walk, would help attract more visitors to the town and create opportunities for local businesses.
It has approved the release of about £5.4m to the scheme, with a view to work starting on site early next year.
Graham Turner, the council's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is another important milestone for Our Cultural Heart.
"The new museum and art gallery will become a key cultural destination for Yorkshire and showcase the huge mix of talent we have across the region.
"Not only will this project attract more visitors to our town centre and boost Kirklees' economy, it will also ensure the long-term preservation and vitality of one of our most cherished buildings."
He added: "Huddersfield has a bright future, and I am proud to be part of it."
The "Our Cultural Heart" development has been designed to breathe new life into the town centre, especially the area between Queensgate, Queen Street, King Street and Victoria Lane.
