Several road accidents on A30 in wintry conditions

Police said one of the incidents on the A30 had involved eight cars

There were eight collisions on the A30 in Cornwall on Monday, with one involving eight cars, police have said.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said wintry conditions had "played a part" in a number of the incidents, and added two further crashes involving seven vehicles in total on the A30 in Cardinham had been reported on Tuesday.

A man sustained facial injuries in an eight-car collision near the Camborne West junction on the westbound carriageway at about 19:45 GMT, they said.

At about midday, officers were called to three separate collisions involving a total of four cars on the dual carriageway at Scorrier after a hail storm, leaving some people with minor injuries.

'Only travel if absolutely necessary'

Police said there had also been incidents on the A30 at Temple, Fourwinds, Launceston and Bodmin, in which vehicles were damaged but no people were injured.

There was also an crash on the A30 at Okehampton in Devon on Monday.

The force's spokesperson said: "We would appeal to motorists to check local weather forecasts before setting off and drive carefully, especially in adverse conditions.

"During periods covered by a weather warning, we would advise motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary."

On Tuesday, police said officers were called out at about 10:50 to a three-vehicle crash on the A30 in Cardinham which left one person with minor injuries.

The force added a separate crash at the same time involving four vehicles was also reported on the same stretch of the A30 in conditions described as "icy".

After the yellow weather warning for snow and ice on Monday ended on Tuesday morning, a second yellow weather warning for snow is due to start at 09:00 on Wednesday, ending at 23:59, covering east Cornwall and most of Devon.
