A woman from Devon has been reliving her days working with famous actors and musicians as a make-up artist in the 1960s and 1970s.

Shirley Bartlett, 92, who now lives in Yelverton, worked on The Muppet Show and This Is Tom Jones for which she was nominated for an Emmy award in 1970.

She has had stars including Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews and Gene Kelly in her make-up chair.

While many fans can only dream of having such a one-on-one experience with such celebrities Mrs Bartlett said she "didn't think of it like that, it was a job of work and you just got on with it and did it".

She added she didn't spend a lot of time talking: "You think how long is this going to take me, so you just get done and gradually you might end up on a sort of more private chat."

She retired in 1997 but said she still found her focussing on the make-up when watching things at home.

Mrs Bartlett's niece, Ruth Brighton, grew up listening to her stories: "When they say thank you for making me look so good, you wouldn't say that if you didn't mean it would you.

"We were in awe and Shirley was always so unassuming about it all because she always said it was just her job but she would bring scripts home and she would tell us all the stories of who she's been working with.

"We would always sit waiting for her credits to come up at the end of the show."
