A man has been left seriously injured after being shot by police carrying out an arrest for an outstanding warrant.

Officers attended a property in Ashford Road, Hollingbourne, at about 19:15 BST on Monday to carry out the arrest.

Kent Police said on Tuesday that one of its officers used a firearm to shoot the man and confirmed that the incident was not related to terrorism.

The man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital with what are thought to be life-changing injuries.

Police said that while the incident was not terror-related, an explosive ordnance disposal team was on scene "to make the area safe".

Additional units, including firearms patrols, were also present.

Officers were called to an incident close to The Park Gate Inn in Hollingbourne on Monday evening

A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the agency had opened an investigation into the incident.

They said: "We have sent investigators to the scene. Our investigation is in the very early stages.

"The man is receiving treatment in hospital for his injuries which are thought to be life changing."

A Kent Police spokesperson said the force was supporting the IOPC's inquiry.

The shooting happened near the The Park Gate Inn, which posted on its social media to "reassure everyone that nothing happened in the pub itself", rather at a house nearby.

Owners said the pub would reopen when emergency services allow.

The stretch of the A20 outside the pub, leading up to the Leeds Castle roundabout, remains closed, with traffic diverted along the B2163.
