City's £1m revamp of community centres under way

A £1m scheme to refurbish six community centres in Hull is under way.
Hull City Council said the centres on Goodrich Close, Waveney Road, Edinburgh Street, Bean Street, Greenwood Avenue and Spring Bank would be improved with better lighting and to make them energy efficient.
The works are expected to take four months to complete and has been funded by the government's Levelling Up funds, which was secured in 2023.
Mitchell Community Centre, on Goodrich Close, is the first to be refurbished with double glazing, a high-efficiency boiler and LED lighting being installed at the premises.
Eastmount Community and Recreation Centre on Waveney Road and the centre on West Parade, off Spring Bank, will also be fitted with new high efficiency boilers. While LED lighting will be installed on the others.
Maurice Rawling Centre on Bean Street and Edinburgh Street's centre will be improved with double glazing and LED lighting.
Councillor Jack Haines, portfolio holder for communications and communities, said he hoped the centres would be "comfortable and welcoming places for people to meet and spend time", once completed.
"Community centres have a vital role in our neighbourhoods and help to enrich local life.
"They mean different things to different people and are a valuable asset where people can connect for a wide range of reasons, such as for leisure activities, to celebrate, for educational and development opportunities, to socialise, or simply share information."
