Tribute to 'kind-hearted' mum who died after attack

A woman who died after being attacked following a crash in Leicester has been described as "a beautiful, vibrant soul" by her son and daughter.

Leicestershire Police said Nila Patel, 56, was assaulted in Aylestone Road after a BMW overturned nearby at about 17:30 BST on 24 June and died in hospital from her injuries two days later.

Michael Chuwuemeka, 23, of Dover Street in Leicester, has been charged with murder and appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Saturday, when a provisional trial date was set for 23 February.

In a statement released by the force on Tuesday, Ms Patel's son and daughter described her as "one of the most kind-hearted people you could ever meet".

Paying tribute to their mother, Jaiden and Danika Patel said: "Mum's life was full of love, and the stories we've heard from those who knew her have reminded us of just how deeply she touched the lives around her.

"She was truly rich in love and generosity.

"We will miss her more than words can ever express. We didn't get the chance to say goodbye, and that pain is something we carry every day.

"But we will continue to speak her name with pride, honour her memory, and live by the values she taught us."

Police said a post-mortem examination had been conducted, and a provisional cause of Ms Patel's death was given as a head injury.

Mr Chuwuemeka, who has been remanded in custody, has also been charged with dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply Class B drugs, attempted grievous bodily harm relating to an incident on Welford Road prior to the collision, and assault of an emergency worker following an alleged assault on a police officer after his arrest.

He has also been charged with causing actual bodily harm in connection with a separate victim in London in the early hours of 24 June.

He is due to appear at Leicester Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 26 September.
