A fundraising scheme to buy benches in memory of a former footballer who took his own life has raised more than £4,000.

Former Southend United captain Chris Barker died aged 39 on New Year's Day in 2020.

The Bench for Barks campaign said it would be a "fitting tribute" and the bench would be a source of information for someone else who may feel alone.

Two seats are expected to be placed at the Blues' home ground of Roots Hall.

Andy Leader is from the Southend United Ex-Players Association and is involved in the project, along with the Shrimpers Trust supporters' group.

"These are good quality benches and they're used as a source of information or indeed inspiration," he said.

Barker started his career at youth level with Alfreton Town in Derbyshire, before playing for Barnsley, Cardiff City, Stoke City, Colchester United, Queens Park Rangers and Plymouth Argyle.

He joined Southend in 2010 and went on to start 47 matches and earn the supporters' player of the year trophy in his first season.

The defender made 142 league and cup appearances for the Blues before departing in August 2013.

'Ambitious'

The seats, supplied by the Legend on the Bench campaign, are fitted with lighting and a QR code that links people to mental health support.

The charity's ambassadors include former Tottenham and Chelsea midfielder Micky Hazard and World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles.

Mr Leader said Southend had agreed to place the two benches near the east and west stands.

"So far the campaign has gone really well and we've raised a fair amount of money (£4,591) for at least two benches, but we're going to be a little bit more ambitious than that and raise enough money for a third," he said.

Mr Leader said the aim was to have the benches installed in time for the last home game of the season at the end of April.

"We're in touch with Chris Barker's family and they've been really supportive of it."
