Camera enforcement to begin on school streets
Two new cameras are being put in place in Leicester to crack down on motorists ignoring school run restrictions.
Leicester City Council said the cameras are being put in place in Eastcourt Road and Northfold Road, which borders Overdale infant and junior schools in Knighton, and enforcement action will begin on Tuesday.
Access for vehicles between 08:00 and 09:00 and 14:30 and 16:00 from Monday to Friday is limited to drivers who have been granted exemptions.
The council said it will hand out warnings for first offences over the first six months, before penalty charges of £70 - reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days - will be issued.
Residents on both streets and eligible parents at the schools have been invited to apply for exemptions by the authority, which said it is introducing the cameras following a consultation.
Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for transport and environment, said: "Camera enforcement can be a very effective way of deterring motorists from committing traffic offences that are dangerous or obstructive for other road users.
"That's why we're introducing these measures to help enforce restrictions on two school streets close to Overdale infant and junior schools.
"The restrictions here were originally introduced following feedback from local residents and families at the schools and it's important that we do whatever we can to discourage people from ignoring them."
