A group of buskers are hoping to raise funds to attempt to revive a cancelled music festival.

The annual Strawberry Fair in Cambridge was cancelled this year, after organisers said costs had spiralled out of control.

On the weekend of 7 June, when the event was due to take place, musicians in the city will host The Cambridge Buskers Festival, with money raised going to the Strawberry Fair.

Greg Butler, chairman of organisers Cambuskers, said: "We wanted to provide an alternative event that performers could take part in and at the same time help towards ensuring we get Strawberry Fair back next year."

Cambuskers hope demand for performance slots will be high

The Cambridge Buskers Festival began in 2008 and the last time it was held in the city it had 17 busking spots, mostly on street locations, and 90 acts over two days.

In 2016 the group took up the Buskers Showcase Stage, collaborating annually with the Strawberry Fair by performing at the event.

Hoping to help the fair return next year, Cambuskers asked for a donation of £200 from each venue that takes part in their alternative busking event.

Mr Butler said: "We expect the demand for performance slots to be high and feel this will be a fun and interesting alternative festival for them to be part of."
