More than 100 people been arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-driving as part of a police initiative

A total of 134 motorists have been arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-driving as part of a Christmas clampdown, police said.

Northamptonshire Police carried out checks across the county for its month-long campaign Operation Limit.

Of the 134 arrests, 94 were suspected of drink driving, 39 of drug driving, and one of both offences.

Insp Ian Wills, from the force's road policing team, said: "We've had extra patrols on, with officers tasked with looking specifically at drink driving behaviours."

'Naming and shaming'

Last year's campaign saw 97 drivers charged with driving over the alcohol limit and 37 arrested for failing roadside drug tests.

This marked a slight increase in drug-driving arrests compared to 2022, when 18 were recorded.

As in previous years, the force will publish the names of offenders on its website and social media.

Insp Wills continued: "We go for the naming and shaming to get the message out there that [drink driving] is unacceptable."
