A man has been arrested and the bomb squad was called after a car was driven through barriers at a disused Army barracks.

Police were called to St Omer Barracks in Aldershot after reports that a man with a knife tried to enter the barracks before getting out of the car, shouting at the guards, at 16:30 GMT on Saturday.

He damaged the outside of the car with a knife and the explosive ordnance disposal team attended because of comments the man made, Hampshire police said.

No-one was hurt and police said the incident was not currently being treated as terror related.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the vehicle was not exploded as no explosive threat was found by the bomb squad.

A 54-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place and criminal damage. He remains in police custody.

The force said an investigation had been launched and inquiries were under way to establish the full circumstances.
