A "prolific" shoplifter has been banned from entering every Co-op in Crewe, police said.

Christopher Davies, 39, of no fixed address, appeared at Chester Magistrates' Court on Thursday, charged with three counts of shoplifting.

He pleaded guilty to all three counts and was made subject to a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

Cheshire Constabulary said he had stolen from local businesses across the town "for a long time" and hoped the CBO would "deter such actions in the future".

Police added the order also banned him from entering the Grand Junction Retail Park.

In addition to the CBO, Mr Davies was made subject to a community order consisting of drug rehabilitation activity and a compensation order of more than £200.

Inspector Daniel Welch, of Crewe Local Policing Unit, said: "I hope that the [CBO] given to Davies today can provide some reassurance to residents and businesses that we are doing all we can to deter criminality and anti-social behaviour within Crewe".

"I'd continue to urge residents to report any suspicious activity or retail crime, so that together, we can make life difficult for criminals like Davies and make Cheshire a hostile for those intent on committing crime", he added.

The thefts to which Davies pleaded guilty were carried out in October and November.
