Surrey's first gurdwara set to open in May

Surrey's first gurdwara is set to open on the site of a former Ministry of Defence building in Camberley in the spring.

The Gura Nanak Gurdwara Camberley charity raised £1.5m to transform the ex-military base into a place of worship which is to open on 3 May.

A spokesperson from the charity told the BBC that as "a community we are absolutely thrilled that we can announce a grand opening date".

They added it is the "culmination of a two-decade search" and that despite "highs and lows" the "continuing unwavering support means the community has grown from strength to strength."

The building in London Road, Camberley, went up for auction in November with a guide price of £850,000.

The charity said it will hold a festival to celebrate the opening which will involve artists, musicians and philosophers from the Sikh community.

Around 2,000 visitors are expected on the opening weekend.

The charity has previously said the gurdwara will serve as a community centre and a food bank as well as a place of worship.
