Man killed by police shot once, investigators say
A knife-wielding man who was killed by armed police on Christmas Eve was shot once in the chest, investigators have said.
Marcus Meade, 39, died at a property in Fownhope Close, Redditch at around 20:00 GMT on 24 December after a five-hour stand off with police.
West Mercia Police had been called over concerns for his welfare and tried to negotiate with him before storming the house, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.
Armed officers used distraction devices and at least one Taser before the fatal shot was fired, they added.
During their investigation into the death, the IOPC said they had gathered "many hours" of body-worn footage and had interviewed the officer involved.
A spokesperson for the organisation said officers were first called to the house at about 14:00 GMT and tried to negotiate with Mr Meade, who was in possession of a knife.
At about 19:40, they broke into the home and used devices which generated several loud bangs and flashes in a bid to distract the 39-year-old.
A single shot was later fired, hitting Mr Meade in the chest.
Officers attempted immediate first aid but he died at the scene a short time later, the IOPC said.
IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: "Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Mr Meade's family, and everyone affected by his death.
"We are working hard to piece together all the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and we want to reassure the community that our investigation, which is still in its early stages, will be thorough and guided by the evidence we find."
He added the inquiry would examine police strategy and tactics, as well as officers' actions and decision-making and whether relevant policies and procedures were followed.
Following his death, Mr Meade, who according to his family had mental health problems, was described by his brother Jahziah Meade as an "incredible father, brother and friend".
