Recycling centre remains closed following fire

A recycling centre remains closed after a blaze broke out at the facility, caused by flying embers drifting from a small fire on a nearby cycle path.

The Bristol Waste site in Kings Weston Lane, Avonmouth, was evacuated on Friday evening and 16 fire engines were deployed to the depot to tackle the flames.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said it was unclear how the original fire had started, but added there were not believed to be any "sinister intentions".

Bristol Waste said Avonmouth Household Reuse and Recycling Centre would remain closed over the weekend but reopen as normal on Monday.

A spokesperson said: "We are grateful to the fire crews who attended the scene quickly and, working alongside our site team, were able to extinguish the fire and keep everyone safe.

"We are monitoring the site closely and carrying out clean-up activities.

"For those booked to visit our Avonmouth Household Reuse and Recycling Centre this weekend, please do not attempt to visit the site.

"Instead use our St Philip's Days Road and Hartcliffe Way Household Reuse and Recycling Centres, which will be open as normal and will welcome existing Avonmouth bookings."
