Council office shut while police probe unexplained death

The customer hub at Edinburgh City Chambers will be closed for a week while police investigate the unexplained death of a man in its support office.

Police Scotland said emergency services responded on Monday to a report of an unresponsive person inside the High Street building.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, with the death being treated as "unexplained", however they said the death was "not believed to be suspicious".

Edinburgh Council's website is encouraging residents to use the city's other customer support offices.

Emergency services arrived at the office just after 09:10 on Monday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

Jane Meagher, City of Edinburgh Council leader, said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

"While the hub remains closed to customers, visitors can seek support at the City Chambers and, if needed, Waverley Court. Please also use our four other local offices."
