A large diesel spill has closed a stretch of a main route in Southampton.

Police said the fuel spillage from an HGV happened shortly after 05:30 BST on the A335 Thomas Lewis Way.

The road has been closed throughout the day between St Denys junction and Lawn Road while the spill was cleared and the road surface checked.

The northbound side has since reopened but the southbound carriageway remains shut. Drivers are being urged to find an alternative route.

Southampton City Council said Kingsbury Road was open for access to businesses on Empress Road only.
