A man has been arrested over a house fire which left another with serious injuries.

Northumbria Police arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of cannabis production following the blaze, which happened on Southend Road, Sunderland, at about 19:40 GMT on Monday.

Residents were evacuated from their homes "as a precaution", police said, with "the majority" now having returned.

The injured man, also in his 40s, is being treated in hospital.

The force said Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire last night and police officers were in the area carrying out inquiries.

Anyone with information should contact police.
