Emergency services were called to the River Sid in Sidmouth on Saturday morning

A major search and rescue operation in a seaside town has been scaled back after emergency services failed to find anything.

Devon and Cornwall Police said emergency services were called to Salcombe Road in Sidmouth shortly before 10:00 GMT on Saturday, after members of the public "reported concerns about an object seen in the water".

Police said: "A multi-agency search and rescue operation took place but at this time nothing has been located.

"Searches at the scene are reducing however enquiries remain ongoing."

Police said anyone with information should contact the force on 101 quoting log 236 of 23 November.

Officers from emergency services look over a wall. They are looking into the river.
