There were widespread travel delays on the M5 northbound from Portishead to Cribbs Causeway

All lanes have now reopened on a motorway after a four-vehicle crash brought rush hour traffic to a standstill.

The M5 northbound was closed between J18A for the M49 and J17 for Cribbs Causeway, near Bristol, at 06:00 GMT after a collision involving two HGV lorries and two vans.

The motorway reopened at about 09:50 GMT, but the exit slip road at J17 remains shut and congestion stretches back to J19 for Portishead.

It is not believed anyone has been seriously injured in the crash, Avon and Somerset Police said.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service added: "The large HGV was well alight and firefighters used two 45mm covering jets and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the flames.

"Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety. Firefighters remained to make the scene safe ahead of vehicle recovery."

The fire has since been extinguished.
