A man has been charged with murder after a man died following a suspected assault at a house.

Michael Craig, 31, was found seriously injured at an address in Bolingbroke Street, Heaton, in Newcastle, at about 16:50 GMT on Wednesday, Northumbria Police said.

He was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder and will appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

Police said North East Ambulance Service initially contacted the force following a report of concern.

Det Ch Insp Katie Smith, of Northumbria Police, asked the public to "respect the ongoing legal proceedings by avoiding any commentary or speculation that could undermine the case".
