Herm refurbishment under way despite losses
Parts of Herm are set to be closed until mid-spring due to renovation work, bosses have said.
Representatives for Herm Island said it was time to carry out "much-needed refurbishments to ensure we're ready for the next season".
The Travel Trident ferry would continue to service the island but attractions such as the White House Hotel and beach cafes would not open until April.
Hospitality manager Tom Jones said Herm had not been profitable for a number of years and continued investment was needed.
Mr Jones said after Covid people were "choosing very wisely" about where to spend their money.
"I can honestly say that Herm, for the last few years, has been a business that has made losses," he said.
"Whilst the individual businesses are profitable, the cost of running Herm exceeds that profit, which leaves the business as a whole without profit.
"Since Covid has gone, people's lifestyles have changed significantly... their disposable income is not what it used to be."
'Continual investment'
Bosses said work on the Mermaid Tavern had been prioritised over winter and it was due to reopen in time for February half-term.
Mr Jones said furniture in the courtyard would be replaced with new items made by the prisoners at Les Nicolles and the tavern kitchen would have a have new resin flooring.
He said work had also started on The White House Hotel, which will be redecorated and have new fire doors installed.
New ensuite rooms will be built in the seasonal staff block, while self-catering cottages will undergo a refit.
Mr Jones said: "We are very fortunate that our tenants understand that we need continual investment.
"People come to bars and restaurants and expect to be in comfort."
