A Devon man has been arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance with intent to endanger life and attempted arson with intent to endanger life, police have said.

It comes after two cars were set alight in Great Meadow in Cranbrook on Christmas Eve at about 04:40 GMT.

A nearby homeowner had attempted to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose before Royal Navy bomb disposal experts made the scene safe.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the 31-year-old suspect, from the Exeter area, had been released on police bail until 20 March.

At the time of the incident, a police spokesperson told the BBC: "Emergency services attended the scene where it was reported that a suspected ordnance was located.

"Royal Navy EOD [explosive ordnance disposal] teams attended to assist with inquiries at the scene and made the item safe."
