Grandad abandons Atlantic row over technical issues
A grandfather has had to withdraw from a solo "world's toughest row" across the Atlantic Ocean shortly after setting off.
Vic Handley, 70, from Littleover, in Derby, began the challenge on Wednesday, but organisers said "shortly after this morning's race start, he encountered unexpected technical issues".
Mr Handley was aiming to be the third oldest person to complete the 3,000-mile row from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean.
The World's Toughest Row said: "Despite all equipment being thoroughly tested and approved beforehand, some challenges are simply beyond control."
The organisers added: "Vic has now been towed safely back in by one of our support vessels and is now back on land.
"We would like to acknowledge Vic's incredible effort and preparation leading up to the race. His determination and spirit embody the true essence of this challenge."
Mr Handley set off alongside 38 other boats that were taking on the challenge – including just six solo crafts.
The retired engineering director was sailing a boat, named The City of Derby.
