An authority has promised a "major programme of investment and improvement" to prevent potholes and enhance its transport schemes.

BCP Council, responsible for roads across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, has received more than £10m of government funding to support the project over the next 12 months.

Key routes are expected to be resurfaced as part of the scheme.

Andy Hadley, head of highways maintenance and sustainable transport, said potholes had been a "source of real frustration for motorists", and that increased funding meant "more preventative action" would be taken to protect roads.

He added: "This allocation, from central government, will allow our maintenance team to respond to priority problem areas - improving the quality of our roads and, in doing so, the safety of them for everyone."

The funding is about £2m more than last year.

About £7.5m will go towards maintenance funding for the next financial year, and £3.1m set aside for so-called "integrated transport block" schemes.

These include network improvements, active travel such as walking or cycling, accessibility, public transport, road safety, and local traffic scheme improvements.

BCP Council is responsible for maintaining 780 miles of roads and pavements across the region.
