Leon Yould was a "massive part" of his family's lives

The family and friends of a man who died when he was hit by a car just before Christmas are coming together to help his one-year-old grandson, who was critically injured in the crash.

Leon Yould, 56, and grandson Michael were struck on West Street in Worsbrough, Barnsley, on 22 December.

Leon's relative Tyrone Yould, or Tye, described him as a "loving and generous" man who "can't be replaced".

Tye, and Leon's other family and friends, have already raised more than £1,000 for baby Michael ahead of a 10k run at York Racecourse.

'Heart-warming'

They are hoping to double the fund before the run on 16 February, which anyone is welcome to take part in.

Tye, Leon's cousin's son, said: "His nickname was 'Wally' because he was crackers, just daft. He is such a massive part of all our lives."

Leon once took him window cleaning while he was on strike to help pay his bills, despite not needing another employee, Tye said.

"I went from calling him uncle to being friends in later life," he added.

A minute's applause was held in the 56th minute of Barnsley's League One fixture against Wrexham on New Year's Day for Leon, who was a lifelong Barnsley fan.

The Outpost pub has put out donation boxes for Michael, who remains at Sheffield Children's Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Tye said it was "heart-warming" how the community had pulled together for the family.

"We're just hoping and praying Michael pulls through in the best way he can," he said.

"You see things in the news and think how awful it is, but you never think it's going to be one of your own."
