A woman has admitted killing a two-year-old boy in a car crash in the Highlands.

Iain Mackay, from Wick, died in hospital several days after the two-car crash on the A99 between Latheron and Wick.

Iain and his mum, Ashlyne, were returning home from a play park on 22 August 2021 when the crash happened on a bend in the road at Occumster.

Sonya Henderson, 47, of Lybster, had been due to go to trial at Wick Sheriff Court, but pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

Iain's mum and the driver of the car they were in, Savanna Nixey, were injured.

The court heard police crash investigators found that Henderson's Nissan Qashqai had entered the bend on the opposing carriageway before the crash.

Sheriff Neil Wilson deferred sentence for a social work report until 21 January.
