Rapist sent to prison for more than 20 years
A man has been jailed for raping a woman on an industrial estate.
Jonathon Newby, 34, of Gypsey Road, Bridlington, followed his victim as she walked home on 19 March last year and attacked her from behind with a blade before raping her in a wooded area on Bessingby Industrial Estate.
After a nine-day trial at Grimsby Crown Court in November, Newby was found guilty of three counts of rape, using an offensive weapon to threaten, carrying a weapon with the intention of committing a sexual offence, and unlawful wounding.
On Monday, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison with a further four years to be served on licence.
Following the attack, the woman found two police officers on patrol nearby.
Newby was arrested after he was spotted walking in the direction of Bessingby Road.
'Protecting communities'
After the sentencing, Det Con Ethan Anderson said: "Newby is a sexual predator who subjected a woman to a horrific and utterly traumatising ordeal for his own perverse needs.
"By refusing to admit his despicable crimes he has then put her through further torment, having to relive the ordeal in a trial.
"I hope today's result reassures the community of Bridlington, and the wider community of the Humberside Police area, that we will never tolerate or condone any form of violence against women or girls and will always prioritise safeguarding victims and protecting communities."
