Site for new medical centre acquired by council

A site for a new medical centre in East Sussex has been acquired by a council.

Wealden District Council is to use the site to establish a new facility for residents of Polegate and Willingdon.

Outline planning permission has already been granted for the medical centre on the A2270, which runs between the two areas.

The council's lead member for public health and asset management, Kelvin Williams, said it is vital to ensure that health infrastructure can support the growing population.

In December, cabinet members approved feasibility work for the new facility to be carried out with local health officials.

Amy Galea, chief primary care and integration officer at NHS Sussex, described the latest development as a "really positive step" in providing health services close to people's homes.

Local MP James MacCleary said: "Residents have been let down for too long by delays and lack of funds, but now we are making real progress."

Mr MacCleary said he also wants a satellite facility to remain in Polegate town centre.
