Fly-tipping 'out of control', council leader says
Fly-tipping is "out of control" in parts of East Yorkshire, its council leader has said.
Recent incidents around Orchard Park Road, North Moor Lane and Middledyke Lane, on the outskirts of Cottingham, have left the area in an "appalling state", according to ward councillor Phil Redshaw.
He called on the council to address the issue and "find a workable solution".
Council leader Anne Handley agreed, adding: "We need to do something to find a way forward."
Redshaw wants to see the introduction of "additional street lighting coupled with permanent CCTV or mobile cameras" in a bid to catch offenders in the act.
Handley has agreed to meet with Redshaw and the council's executive director Paul Bellotti to discuss the matter further.
Redshaw said the issue in his ward had been "ongoing for some time" and pictures taken last week of incidents in Orchard Park Road during a site visit with council officers showed the extent of the problem.
Tyres, cardboard boxes, children's play equipment and bags of rubbish were among the items that have been dumped.
A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: "We know this site in Cottingham is an issue and we have carried out measures nearby in the past to address the problem.
"Our officers met with local councillors and agreed to investigate what can be done at this site and to look at the costs of further action.
"We take incidents of fly-tipping in the East Riding very seriously and we always take action against those responsible where we can."
The council launched a campaign in September 2024 against similar issues in Bridlington.
