The A30 has been closed near Redruth as police "investigate a serious incident".

The eastbound carriageway was closed between the junctions at Scorrier and Tolvaddon and police said the closure is likely to be in place during the afternoon.

Devon and Cornwall Police said it was dealing with "a serious incident in the Illogan area" but "there is no risk to public safety".

They asked motorists to avoid the area and diversions were put in place with traffic rerouted via the A3047 in both directions.

The B3300 New Portreath Road has also been closed in both directions.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We anticipate that the eastbound carriageway of the A30 in Cornwall will remain closed for a number of hours today while we continue to investigate a serious incident in the Illogan area."

At around 08:00 GMT both directions of the A30 had been closed but the westbound was reopened just after 09:00.

A spokesperson for Highways South West said the incident was "expected to be protracted" and the closure be in place "for a considerable time".

Police said they would continue to provide further updates as soon as they were able to.
