A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a member of the public reported seeing an HGV swerving across the road.

North Yorkshire Police said it deployed officers after receiving information about the way the vehicle was being driven on the A169 near Malton, just before 22:30 GMT last night.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, failed to provide a specimen of breath at the roadside and was arrested.

He later provided a sample of breath over three times the legal limit for alcohol and was held in custody, the force said.

Sgt James Jarman said the arrest was one of more than 70 made since 1 December, as part of the force's Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.

"Drive drinking risks the lives of all road users – but to be driving an HGV whilst three times over the limit is incomprehensible.

"I would like to thank the member of public for calling the police."
