Inmate at privately-run prison dies in hospital

An inmate from a privately-run prison has died in hospital, a prison service spokesperson has confirmed.

Roger Lemon, 79, who was being held at HMP Five Wells, a category C prison in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, died on 10 April.

He is the third HMP Five Wells prisoner who has died in the last five months. In December, there were two deaths in 15 days.

A spokesperson for the prison, run by security firm G4S, said: "As with all deaths in custody, this will be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

"It is for the coroner to determine cause of death," the spokesperson added.
