A new classical music event for children has been announced as part of this year's York Proms.

The Junior Proms event will take place in the city's Museum Gardens on 28 July.

The program has not been confirmed but organisers said it could include children's favourites such as the Nutcracker and Harry Potter.

York singer Rebecca Newman, who set up the event in 2017, told the BBC she had always wanted to hold a children's version.

Ms Newman, whose husband Jonathan Fewtrell died in 2020, said it was "something we both really wanted to do".

She said: "He was a big kid at heart, he was such good fun [and] this is my way of keeping his legacy alive".

"It gives me something to focus on, gives me a passion and I love nothing more than working with other people," she said.

"Doing something creative and collaborative, it's what's been missing from my life since we lost him."

Organiser Rebecca Newman said she was keen to launch the junior event

She said there were also plans in place to create an children's choir to sing a "brand new song for York" and create an accompanying music video

The single is set to be released on World Music Day.

York Proms will feature a performance from the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir with musical director by Bernice Lewis and there will be a community stage for local groups to perform.
