A popular walking route in Lincolnshire is to be upgraded with a mile-long stretch of new footpath around a former flooded gravel pit-turned lake.

North Hykeham's Millennium Green is due to close for three weeks from 6 January for the work to take place.

North Kesteven District Council said the site, off Station Road, would be "better for walkers, wheelchair users, cyclists and other visitors, opening up the site to more of our community".

Richard Wright, council leader and executive member for development, economy and culture, said: "Once the path is finished we'll be inviting the community to join us for a collective walk to celebrate the improved access."

He said he acknowledged regular visitors would be disappointed, but closing the site "means that it can all happen quickly and more cost-effectively, giving the Green back to the public in the shortest possible time".

The authority added the new footpath would mean improved year-round access for "a wider range of visitors".
